Informal family photography is an area where sheer quality is much less important than catching the moment and the emotion. It’s an area where the reasonably competent amateur will frequently outshine the professional. Why, because she won’t be there!

Keep your camera on the sideboard, and await those special times, baking cookies, dressing up, writing and drawing, even building a camp in the box the washing machine came in. These are all precious moments which are so often totally spontaneous.

Which settings to use? If you know the basics of working outside the auto zone and have a 50mm f1.8 lens I would suggest setting the ISO at 400 and the mode dial on “P” (programme auto). If using the kit lens shoot in the brighter parts of the home and keep the iso to 800 or below to prevent the pictures becoming grainy. Keep the lens set to wide angle where possible because the more you zoom the less light it lets in.

Shoot children from their own level, kneel and crawl around with them, sit on the floor, lie on the floor, but don’t look down on them. Create scenarios where the kids will stay in one place where the light is good and the background not to messy. Do this by setting up the painting or drawing stuff, or maybe the ingredients to top a pizza. Place the very young in a cardboard box (watch out they can tip over) and have them peaking over the top.

Children will quickly forget the camera if you talk while you shoot. The most important aspect of the picture is the child’s expression and when it’s right don’t miss the moment. If you get one great shot and half a dozen good ones in a session you’ve done well. Natural portraits, especially with children are a very hit and miss area so don’t be disappointed if the majority of shots are less than perfect.

Before we continue, you need to understand that digital SLRs are notoriously complex machines. It is very difficult to master a DSLR, even after reading the the manual many times. That’s why it is very important to understand the concepts behind photography (i.e. shutter speed, aperture, etc) before getting a DSLR.

1. Overview

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi is a 12.2 megapixel DSLR and is the the fourth model in Canon’s Digital Rebel class. The Digital Rebel series (which I’ve reviewed previously) are great quality DSLRs. I’ve yet to see many bad photos coming from a Digital Rebel (unless the photographer is not good). Among its new features of the Canon EOS Rebel XSi are an image-stabilized kit lens, a larger LCD display, a Live View option, as well as a revamped control scheme/button layout.

2. Design and Construction

Like the Nikon D90, the Canon EOS Rebel XSi is well built. The XSi is all black in color and it measures 3.8 x 5.1 x 2.4 inches (HWD) without a lens. The weight is amazingly light, at just 475g (just over a pound). When you take camera out to take some pictures, you’ll notice it is a somewhat bulky camera. However, this is not an issue if you have a good camera bag. I really like the bright display on the XSi, which is now larger than previous models, at 3 inches and with 230,000 pixels.

3. Optics and Resolution

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi is a 12.2-megapixel resolution DSLR. When wandering out to take night shots, I found that the night shots were reasonably noise-free. The images were also better illuminated, with improved color fidelity compared to my old Canon XTi. If you need to extend the capabilities of the Canon EOS Rebel XSi, then you probably need to kit it with some good lenses.

4. User Controls

In terms of user controls, the Canon EOS Rebel XSi has Menu and Display buttons which are sensibly kept together. If you access the ISO button frequently, you’ll find it has been moved from the scroll wheel to the top, near the On/Off switch. This is a slight problem, however, since you might just end up switching ISO modes accidentally.

5. Battery Life

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi boasts a longer battery life than any of the previous Digital Rebels and allows you to explore the camera for hours on end, without requiring a recharge.

6. Shortcomings

The Canon EOS Rebel XSi is a fully functional DSLR with little shortcomings. If I had to pick one for you, it’d be the fact that the user controls can be a little intimidating for new DSLR enthusiasts. However, once you read the manual and get used to the controls, you’ll be snapping photos without a problem.

The Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera is the much anticipated replacement model to the wonderful Nikon D80 that was considered to be a top-of-the-line model for quite a long time. Overall, the D5000 did live up to all the hype and expectations. For its price, this model comes with an impressive feature kit. It comes with an 18-55mm lens that is very sharp and has good focus. It uses a 12.3MP image sensor.

The Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera is also extremely fast. From a cold start, it is ready to take its first shot is just 0.2 seconds. It shot-to-shot time is at just 0.5 seconds and a typical shutter lag time of 0.3 seconds. The only other model (in its class) in the market that matches this speed is the Canon EOS Rebel T1i.

The quality of the images taken on the Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera is extremely good. The images were well saturated and bright. The colors were also very accurate (realistic). The quality of the images was also good at high ISOs. It can also record HD videos at 720p. Although acceptable, the quality of the HD videos were nothing much to shout about.

Another great feature on this model is the 2.7-inch rotating LCD display. It flips downwards and can be rotated at various angles, making it easier to take shots in odd positions. It can even be rotated inwards (facing the camera) so that you don’t need to use a protective plastic cover to prevent it from scratching. The only downside to it is that it is hard to view under bright sunlight. The Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera can also be used with the optional Nikon GPS device and also a built-in wireless flash control.

Sigma 180mm f/3.5 EX DG IF HSM APO Macro Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Review

I have owned this lens now for about a month. It was bought to be used on a Nikon D700, D2x, and D200. I have already taken it on a vacation trip to Mesa Verde, Colorado and it performed flawlessly. It does hunt somewhat at close macro distances but I would prefer manual focus on extreme close ups anyway. The reviews talk about the sturdiness and tank-like quality and this is true but it is easy to handhold at normal shutter speeds.
I have used it for macros, for sports photography and portraits. It hardly ever is taken off the D2x since this is the camera of choice for me. Wife has used it on the D700 and since she does photography for her profession, her opinion counts for me. She loves the lens!
The supplied lens hood will mar fairly easily since I already have some small rub marks. I am not sure I like the sparkly finish on the hood and lens but it works and that is what it is supposed to do. I own two other Sigmas, one consumer type zoom lens which is the 28-105mm f2.8/4 which I hardly use and the 12-24mm EX which I use occasionally. My other lenses are all Nikon which include many primes (300mm f4 and f2.8, 70-200mm 2.8 VR, 80-200mm 2.8 and quite a lot of other ones) and this Sigma 180mm f3.5 is every bit the equal in contrast, sharpness and build as the Nikon lenses. I bought this on Amazon through 47th St. Photo at an amazingly low price. I was worried about the merchant because of previous experience but the lens was shipped immediately, arrived boxed and well packed in 2 business days.
