Sigma 70mm f2.8 EX DG Macro Lens (Canon Mount) Review

I probably just echo Thomas Summer’s comments, but this is a great lens at any price, and in comparison to the cost of the Canon equivalent it is a super value purchase. Even though lens reviews and tests are usually based on just one example, the review in Popular Photography convinced me, and I am glad I made the choice. My only complaint is I don’t really like the dull, “sandblast” finish, but I can live with the cosmetics for the build and lens quality. One feature I really like is that I can use it both on my digital and full frame film camera bodies.

Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX DG IF HSM APO Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Review

Got this lens for use with a Nikon D3 and D300. I shoot mostly sports and needed something a bit longer than my old 80-200/2.8 for field sports like baseball and lacrosse. I also have used this lens indoors for volleyball on my D3 so I can sit way up in the stands and still get close enough while looking down onto court at a cool angle. The 2.8 really comes in handy since my gym’s lighting is absolutely horrible.

Anyway, I also got the Sigma 1.4x TC (which only AF and meters with a few lenses, including this one and the 300/2.8 prime, but they don’t tell you that until you read the booklet insde the TC box!) So combining my 1.5 crop D300 with the 1.4x TC and this monster lens, I get about 250-630/4. In the full-frame D3 I get about 168-420/4 with the same setup. I have heard that some copies of this lens don’t zoom all the way out the the claimed 300 mm but my metadata shows that my max focal length is actually 420 mm with the 1.4 TC on the D3, FWIW.

I thought about getting the 300 prime but really wanted the zoom feature since moving around a lot is not really an option for most sports shooting. I would love to get the Nikkor 200-400/4 but at K, that’s not really an option and besides, I have a 2.8!

Pros: Good image quality, even with 1.4x TC, on par with or better than my Nikkor 80-200/2.8; great in low light at f/2.8; fast and quiet focusing that can keep up with fast action sports; way cheaper than anything Nikon makes (especially since they don’t even make a 120-300/2.8 zoom!)

Cons: Cheap metal finish quality (thin, matte paint that shows scratches easily, if it doesn’t chip off entirely); the zoom ring is reverse of Nikon direction (not bad if zooming is slow and deliberate, but I have issues when I need to snap in or out quickly and old habits take over from using Nikon lenses); zoom ring feels a bit stiffer than my 80-200 (don’t know if it’s just my copy, but I only need gentle fingertip pressure on the 80-200 to zoom but the Sigma requires a firm finger “squeeze”) which affects how fast I can zoom in and out and thus how I shoot; lame lens cover “sock” that doesn’t stay on when the hood is deployed

Other thoughts: Great lens for the money, especially when paired with 1.4x TC. The zoom ring issues I’m dealing with ok, it’s just annoying at times, but not a deal-breaker for me. The biggest niggle is the cheap paint that flakes off (especially on the handle of the rotating collar and the edges of the hood–places that see the most action)

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 IF EX DG HSM AF Standard Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLR Cameras Review

I needed a good zoom for weddings, I have been using a canon 24 1.4 and Sigma 50 1.4 and shooting at 2.8. The 24-70 gives me the 2.8 I like to shoot at plus the range I like to shoot at. I love the Sigma 50 1.4 on my 7D it gives me the look I want. But inside with more then 2 people in the picture I needed to much room so I stopped to switch to the 24L. The problem I found with primes is after an hr of pictures most people start to get grumpy and dont like any delays and stoping to switch lens is a delay so I got the 24-70 2.8 to cover 95% of my pictures.

I had to set my focus adjust on the 7D to +10 for this lens. With the +10 I have just a tiny bit of FF at 24 and a tiny bit of BF at 70 but you have to be at 100% to see it. For cameras that do not have the focus adjust the +10 would be a large problem so if you dont have FA get the canon or plan on sending it in for adjustment, its worth it

A friend ask me to shoot his Hockey game so I used the 24-70 and was very very hapy with the results, out of 66 pictures not one was out of focus. The lens was always in focus. I am not saying it was perfect but it was good enough that you cant tell at 8×10 print size. On my 7D the focus was fast and accurate.

There are some reviews on the net that show this lens has bad corner resolution at 70mm and there are some that show it has better corners then both the Canon and Nikon 24-70′s. The corners on my copy are good but not perfect. The Sigma 50 had about the same resolution at 1.4 as the 24-70 at 2.8 but with the 50 at 2.8 its a bit better. The bokeh is ok but the 50 is better. The colors are good on both and the 24-70 has very little CA.

Picked 5 stars since I couldn’t pick 4 1/2 stars. I bought this lens to replace the 35-80mm lens that came with my Canon EOS Rebel 2000. Having used Sigma lenses with my Pentax 35mm I knew I couldn’t go wrong. This lens is light weight, quick to focus and quiet. Focus ring (for manual fousing) is smooth and in just the right spot. The zoom ring is not quite as smooth as the focus but it’s not a hinderance. The 28-105mm zoom range is ideal for beginning and experienced photographers and provides more flexibility than the 35-80mm lens I replaced. All three rolls of film I’ve shot with this lens look great! Included lens hood is ideal for preventing lens flare when taking pics outside.

Sigma 15mm f/2.8 EX DG Diagonal Fisheye Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Review

Have been using the Sigma 15mm Fisheye for some weeks on a 5Dii and have taken about 1.000 shots with it. The short story: its a great lens that has lots to offer for anyone who like wide angle shots. Colors and flare resistence is tops. Centre sharpness is very good even wide open, while corners tend to be soft and suffer CA unless it is stopped down.

Fisheye lenses have a mixed reputation, which is a shame as they are some of the most versitile lenses around. Some of the bad reputation comes from the fact that some people think all fisheyes are “round”. However, the Sigma 15mm is diagonal fisheye, and fills the picture across the entire sensor.

But why a fisheye at all? Three main reasons;
1) its wider than a standard lens (so 15mm fisheye is much wider than a 14mm standard lens)
2) by not correcting the light (as much as a traditional lens), the fisheye should have less flare and
2) better – even spectacular – colors.

And when it comes to flare resistance the Sigma 15mm shines. Colors are also great, but fisheye lenses can be very tricky for the camera’s light meter. So with my 5Dii I often shoot @ f/-2/3 to f/-1½ to compensate for overexposure at bright daylight.

Some people complain that the Sigma may hunt at low light, but I do not find it more difficult to use than most other lenses – actually I find it quite good. It has worked fine from early morning, over heavy rain to dark night.

Versatile? You bet! The important aspect of shooting a fisheye is to use the focal plane very actively in your shots. There is a dramatic shift in the look and feel of a shot depending on the tilt to the horizon and where in the picture plane your objects are.

Also, as long as you shoot “rounded” objects such as people, a fisheye often works better than a traditional wide lens like the Canon 14L. On the other hand its not very good at buildings unless you use software to correct.

Finally, the ability to use software to straighten out the curved lines makes fisheye lenses more versitile than ever.

For me the Sigma has been a hit. My impression from reading reviews etc. on the net is that there is no significant difference between the Sigma and the Canon, so get whichever is the cheapest where you live (that’s what I did).

[Please disregard the previous review about vignetting. This lens has almost none even on a full frame. The user just forgot to take of the entire lens cap before shooting...]

Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM FLD AF Ultra Wide Zoom Lens for APS-C sized Canon Digital DSLR Camera Review

I am going to give my opinion comparing the Sigma 8 – 16mm to the Sigma 10 – 20mm lens and not to other manufactures WA lenes.

I take around 200,000 pictures a year with the Sigma 10 – 20mm lens. The lens has held up well, feels solid and in my opinion works well with little chromatic aberrations. My only real issue with the 10 – 20 was when taking photos of dark home interiors (which is what I do) and there is a very bright window in the image then sometimes a blue flare appears just off center in the image. This can be reduced by, say 90% in Photoshop. It does not happen every time but when it does even moving to a slightly different shooting position often does not eliminate the problem. The blue flare seems to be not the same problem one might expect to see outdoors shooting in bright sunlight where flare spots can run diagonally through the picture, but then maybe it is the same type of flare. Also by even adding a “thin” filter it can cause some vignetting. The filter issue is forgivable on such a wide angle lens. One last point, there is some slight curvature noticable on verticals close to the sides of the frame.

So to the Sigma 8 – 16mm. I think it’s very well made and feels good and solid right out of the box. I was thinking “20% wider” but forgot also 20% taller in image coverage. It is noticable different in angle of view from the 10 – 20mm. Because of the bulbus front element forget about ever adding a filter. Some WA lenes (fisheyes) allow fitting a filter in the rear of the lens. Forgive me but I have not looked to see if this lens allows that. The front of the lens has a fixed petal lens shade that allows the lens cap to slide/push over it and creating a nice tight fit. The lens cap is in two parts for reasons someone else will have to explain.

The lens has a maximium f4.5 – f5.6 aperture, a little slow but of no importance for most users of a lens this wide and for 99% of the uses it will be put to.

I have taken about 2,000 pictures with my 8 – 16mm and think it is probably slightly better in all aspects than the 10 – 20mm lens, but read the guys who put this lens through lab tests, my tests are in the field and based on what my eyes can see rather than what instruments can measure.

It is a harder lens to use than the Sigma 10 – 20mm. Tilting just slightly will cause verticuls to tilt (thank you Photoshop). I have noticed the blue flare less with this lens than the 10 – 20mm. I think it may be there but spread over a bigger area and less strong and maybe less common. Some flare is to be expected with all super wides. Curviture at the frame edges seems about the same as the 10 – 20mm – which I consider good – again for a super wide.

So which is the better choice. That is a difficult question to answer – it depends. The 8 – 16mm is about 0 more – but is noticable wider. It you need to squeese every inch from a picture then the 8 – 16 is your choice. If price is a concern or landscape is your interest I am sure the 10 – 20 would suffice. However if money is no object then get the 8 – 16mm and then go out and learn to use it. Believe me there is a learning process.

Sigma 180mm f/3.5 EX DG IF HSM APO Macro Lens for Canon SLR Cameras Review

I have owned this lens now for about a month. It was bought to be used on a Nikon D700, D2x, and D200. I have already taken it on a vacation trip to Mesa Verde, Colorado and it performed flawlessly. It does hunt somewhat at close macro distances but I would prefer manual focus on extreme close ups anyway. The reviews talk about the sturdiness and tank-like quality and this is true but it is easy to handhold at normal shutter speeds.
I have used it for macros, for sports photography and portraits. It hardly ever is taken off the D2x since this is the camera of choice for me. Wife has used it on the D700 and since she does photography for her profession, her opinion counts for me. She loves the lens!
The supplied lens hood will mar fairly easily since I already have some small rub marks. I am not sure I like the sparkly finish on the hood and lens but it works and that is what it is supposed to do. I own two other Sigmas, one consumer type zoom lens which is the 28-105mm f2.8/4 which I hardly use and the 12-24mm EX which I use occasionally. My other lenses are all Nikon which include many primes (300mm f4 and f2.8, 70-200mm 2.8 VR, 80-200mm 2.8 and quite a lot of other ones) and this Sigma 180mm f3.5 is every bit the equal in contrast, sharpness and build as the Nikon lenses. I bought this on Amazon through 47th St. Photo at an amazingly low price. I was worried about the merchant because of previous experience but the lens was shipped immediately, arrived boxed and well packed in 2 business days.

Highly recommended.
